Summary

The Ministerial Council on Energy at its recent meeting on 10 December 2010 endorsed the Decision Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) for air conditioners to increase the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for air conditioners which are covered by existing regulations and within the scope of the Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZ 3823.2.

The Decision RIS document has been prepared to communicate the potential impacts, costs and benefits arising from the proposed introduction of more stringent MEPS levels for air conditioners.

Please note this Decision RIS is for Australia only at this stage. If New Zealand decides to proceed with any of the agreed proposals contained within this RIS, a New Zealand discussion document will be released for public consultation at a later date.

The MEPS levels for air conditioners have been steadily introduced and revised over the last ten years. The revised MEPS levels are planned to be implemented from 1 October 2011.
