Summary

This report was prepared for NAEEEC by Energy Efficient Strategies with the assistance of George Wilkenfeld & Associates (Aust), PW Consulting (UK) and Peter du Pont (USA). This report was released in March 1998.

It was commissioned by NAEEEC as part of investigations leading up to the transition to the new appliance energy label in 2000.

It contains a review of international appliance energy labelling programs and examines their broad aims and objectives in the context of energy policy. It also looks at the need for an energy label to take into account local cultural and socioeconomic considerations if its implementation is to be successful. It reviews the label types, information content and communication strategies of the major energy labelling programs currently in operation around the world. Examples of the labels are included. It also looks the evaluation of labelling programs that had been undertaken to date in 1998.

The overall purpose of this study was to collect key information on energy labelling programs in other countries and present it in a way that will assist in the review of labelling in Australia during 1998. This report is the forerunner to the more recent International Review of Energy Labelling and MEPS (see 2001 and 2004 editions for more recent information).
