A range of products are required by law to be registered for energy labelling or MEPS in Australia. Registration applications must be made in the format as prescribed in the applicable Australian Standard. Such applications must be lodged with any one of four regulators in Australia or the regulator in NZ (note that special conditions are applicable for NZ applications).
Registration is currently available for the following products:
If you wish to apply for an exemption from registering your product for labelling and or MEPS you must complete an
Application for Exemption form and lodge this with one of the regulators.
The regulatory program is constantly being reviewed and upgraded and from time to time there are revised or new MEPS levels
for products and occasionally revised energy label requirements. Therefore for many products, there are sometimes several
versions of the relevant standard which could be used for registration purposes. The latest list of regulatory requirements, the
standard and revision date that is applicable and the current
Registration Expiry Dates for each product are now available. Reference should also be made to
Australian Standards - Current Status and Updates for a full listing of regulated products, standards and work in progress.
Below are fact sheets are available to assist new users with the online registration system:
Traditionally, an applicant copied the forms in the relevant standard and submitted these by mail to their chosen regulator. While this option is still available, the preferred method for making an energy labelling or MEPS application is now via the Online Registration Database (see details below). This is a wholly web based registration system that can be used by anyone with access to the internet. A user of this system simply fills in an online form then electronically submits this form for approval to their regulator of choice.
Users of the Online Registration Database enjoy the following benefits:
Users of the online registration system require a username and password to access their product details. These security provisions are necessary to ensure that your records are not accessed by non-regulators without authorisation. To obtain a username and password you are required to make application for use of the online database system. Application is made online by going to the following web site: http://reg.energyrating.gov.au. Note that once you have applied for an online registration username and password, you will be contacted by email within five working days by the system administrator with your log-on details together with detailed instructions on how to use the system.
If you already have a username and password, you can proceed straight to the Online database
If you have a username and password, but need to review the latest edition of the
user's manual (V9)* (292kB), you can download this in PDF format.
*Note: The latest user manual (V9) includes details of the new "set-up wizard" to guide users through the process of commencing a new application for energy rating or MEPS comes into affect from Monday 13 October 2008.
From time to time, an online user's newsletter is released. This provides users with the latest tips and tricks when completing online registrations:
In cases where there are large numbers of registrations to be entered at the one time (generally 50 or more), it may be possible to make arrangements with the System Administrators to pre-load bulk data onto the system to reduce manual data entry.
